This product began as a sub-component of the LOXO Artifact 02, but quickly revealed itself as a design challenge worthy of its own solution. The following outlines the path from investigation to functional prototype.
Phase 1 - Product Analysis; The work started with research. Existing locks were sourced, disassembled, and studied part by part to understand how durability, strength, and failure are handled across the market, and where improvement was possible.
Phase 2 - Design & Construction; Design began with end-user use cases in mind, and evolved alongside the product’s brand philosophy, and design language. Concepts started on paper before moving into CAD, where the form was refined with real manufacturing considerations like assembly order, materials, tolerances, and long term use.
Phase 3 - Functional Design Model; In the final phase, the design became a working prototype, complete with PCB and mechatronics developed in-house.Physical components were 3D printed, assembled, sealed, and finished using custom-built tools to achieve a completely waterproof construction (IPX8). The prototype was then tested in real-world conditions, allowing hypotheses on ergonomics, usability, and durability to be challenged and validated beyond the screen.

A short press shows battery level on the signal LED, stoplight-style. Press and hold for one second to add fingerprints, the signal LED will blink to confirm how many are stored. Hold for three seconds or more to clear all stored prints and enroll from scratch.

Plug in any USB-C cable to charge. The two outer LEDs track charging progress, turning solid green when full. Device is ready to use right away, even from a dead battery.

On first power-up, the signal LED blinks to prompt enrollment. Present your finger until it turns solid green. Lock is keyed to you, ready to open and secure from the first touch.
